How to measure it in Google Maps

On a computer

  1. Go to maps.google.com and search your address.
  2. Click the small Layers square in the bottom-left corner of the map. The map changes to a satellite photo so you can see the driveway.
  3. Zoom in until the driveway fills most of the screen.
  4. Right-click on one end of the driveway and choose Measure distance.
  5. Left-click on the other end. The length shows in a box at the bottom of the screen. Write it down.
  6. Click Close in that box, then repeat across the driveway for the width.

On a phone (Google Maps app)

  1. Search your address. Tap the Layers button (two stacked squares, top right) and choose Satellite.
  2. Press and hold on one end of the driveway until a red pin drops.
  3. Swipe up on the panel at the bottom and tap Measure distance.
  4. Drag the map until the black circle sits on the other end. The length shows at the bottom.
  5. Tap the back arrow, then do the same across for the width.

Type the length and width into the boxes above and we’ll work out the m². Odd shape? Split it into rectangles and add them up. Rough is fine, as we confirm on site.

No maps handy? One big stride is about 1 metre. A single-car driveway is usually about 3 m wide.
