New asphalt driveway being compacted next to a concrete driveway on the Central Coast

Asphalt Driveway Cost on the Central Coast: 2026 Price Guide

Most “asphalt cost per square metre” articles quote a national average. That doesn’t tell you what you’ll pay on the Central Coast. This guide gives you a local price range. The ranges below come from our instant estimator, which is built from our actual 2026 jobs between Gosford, Terrigal, The Entrance and Wyong.

Short answer: most residential asphalt driveways we lay on the Coast (about 10–45 m²) cost between $4,250 and $7,150 including GST. Small repairs start from about $3,500 including GST ($3,200 + GST). The price per square metre drops a lot as the area gets bigger.

Driveway size Typical price range (inc GST) Roughly per m² (inc GST)
About 10 m² (small entry or apron) $4,250 – $4,950 $425 – $495
About 20 m² $4,800 – $5,600 $240 – $280
About 30 m² (single-car driveway) $5,350 – $6,200 $180 – $205
About 45 m² $6,050 – $7,150 $135 – $160
About 60 m² (double or long driveway, usually 2 days) $9,500 – $11,700 $160 – $195

From a recent job: Bateau Bay, about 22 m² – $5,695 including GST

In October 2026 we laid a driveway of about 22 m² in Bateau Bay. It already had a road-base gravel surface, so we added more of our own road base, put in timber edging, then laid the asphalt. Nothing surprised us on the day. “We’d gone out to the site to quote it and done our preparation beforehand. We knew what to expect, so there were no surprises.”

Why small driveways cost more per square metre

Look at the table again. A 10 m² job works out to several hundred dollars a square metre. A 45 m² driveway is closer to $150/m². That isn’t us overcharging small jobs. It’s how asphalt works:

  • Hot mix has a minimum order. The plant loads a minimum quantity, and it has to be laid while it’s hot.
  • The crew and machines turn up either way. A bobcat, tipper, roller, saw and a crew cost much the same for 10 m² as for 40 m².
  • Prep is the same process at any size. Saw-cutting joins, excavating, tip runs and compacting road base all take setup time.

Most of the cost of a small job is getting everything to site. That’s why going from 30 m² to 45 m² usually adds less than $1,000.

“I don’t think people understand how many overheads are involved, or how expensive it can be. Our business runs on fuel, manpower and machines, and none of those things are cheap. If you want the job to last, you need to do it to a certain quality, and that takes time and money.” – Nathan

Tip: if a neighbour needs work too, book together. Sharing the setup cost is the easiest saving there is.

What changes the price of your driveway

  1. Area. The biggest factor, but not a straight line (see above).
  2. Asphalt depth.
    • 40mm of hot mix on at least 100mm of compacted road base suits cars and normal home use. It’s also Central Coast Council’s minimum for an asphalt driveway crossing.
    • 50mm adds strength for light commercial use and occasional delivery trucks.
    • 100mm deep lift is our guide for trucks, buses and turning areas, and costs noticeably more per m². Heavy-duty yards need a pavement designed by an engineer.
  3. What’s there now. Removing old concrete takes more labour and tip fees than lifting old asphalt or gravel. If your existing driveway has a sound base, resurfacing can cost less than a full rebuild.
  4. Ground and base. The ground under your driveway decides how much we dig out. On softer ground we might dig out a couple of hundred millimetres before laying compacted DGB20 road base. Sand drains well, so we like it, and there isn’t much clay on the Coast. Mostly we’re digging out sand, soil and grass. “Grass is the hardest to get rid of. All our material goes to EPA-approved sites, and grass counts as mixed fill. It can cost hundreds of dollars a tonne to dispose of. People probably aren’t aware of that.” Our quotes include a variation clause for rock or unexpected ground.
  5. Access and slope. Steep blocks (think Terrigal, Killcare, Pretty Beach) take longer to prep and roll.
  6. Council crossover. If the job includes the section between your boundary and the road, council approval and inspections are involved. Read our crossover guide.
  7. Extras. Timber edging is about $20 per lineal metre. Tape-sealing the join to the road is about $15–$20 per lineal metre. Extra tip loads add to the price.
  8. Where our materials come from. Our hot-mix asphalt comes from Fulton Hogan and NewPave Asphalt, and our road base from Economy Waste in Gosford. We pick up the road base ourselves.
  9. Material costs. Asphalt and fuel costs have gone up recently, and quotes are based on current prices.

How long will the job take?

  • Up to about 50 m²: prep and asphalt can often be done in one big day. Many jobs are split into a prep day and an asphalt day.
  • Larger driveways: usually one or more prep days, then an asphalt day.
  • Driving on it: new asphalt can usually take traffic once it has cooled, often the same day. We’ll confirm when it’s ready on the day. See how long before you can drive on new asphalt.

Our lead time is usually 3–6 weeks from deposit.

How cheap driveways fail

Nathan has seen plenty of cheap driveways fail, and it usually comes down to one of two shortcuts:

  1. Laying over the wrong base. The contractor scratches off the surface and lays asphalt over something that shouldn’t be built on, like clay. “It’ll rain and it’ll fail, within a year or two.”
  2. Laying it far thinner than quoted. “I’ve seen jobs quoted at a certain depth and then put in incredibly thin, like 10mm. We quote 40mm. It goes down at around 50mm loose and compacts to 40mm.”

Asphalt vs concrete vs spray seal

Surface Upfront cost Good for Watch out for
Spray seal (bitumen + gravel) Lowest Long rural driveways Loose stones, shorter life
Asphalt (hot mix) Mid Most Coast homes; drive on it the same day; easy to patch Needs a well-compacted base
Plain concrete Mid to high Long life, low maintenance Cracks are hard to repair invisibly; longer cure time
Exposed or decorative concrete Highest Looks Costs the most

How long any surface lasts depends mostly on base preparation, drainage and traffic.

If a quote for “asphalt” is well below the ranges above, ask what depth and what base they’re laying. Thin asphalt, poor base preparation and drainage problems are common causes of early failure.

How to get an accurate price fast

  1. Measure roughly. Length × width in metres is close enough. Our estimator explains how to measure it in Google Maps.
  2. Take 3–4 photos if you can. The whole area, the road edge and any problem spots. They help us confirm the estimate.
  3. Use the instant estimator. It gives a price range straight away.
  4. We confirm on site, or by phone for simple jobs. There’s no site-visit fee.

Our terms are simple: a 50% deposit to book, the balance on completion, and a 2-year workmanship warranty (ask us for the details), on top of your rights under Australian Consumer Law.

FAQ

How much is an asphalt driveway per square metre on the Central Coast?
For a standard 40mm driveway with excavation and base, expect roughly $135–$205 per m² including GST for 30–45 m² driveways. Small areas cost much more per m² because of the setup cost. Larger areas cost less.

What’s the smallest job you do?
Small repairs start from about $3,500 including GST ($3,200 + GST). That covers a full crew day, the machines and the minimum asphalt order. If you have several small areas, we’ll do them in the same visit, which is the best value.

Is bitumen the same as asphalt?
On the Coast, people use the words interchangeably. Asphalt (hot mix) is stone and sand bound with bitumen, laid hot and rolled. A “bitumen” spray seal is a thin coat of bitumen with loose stones on top. They are very different products at very different prices.

Can you lay asphalt over my old driveway?
Sometimes. If the existing base is sound, resurfacing can save money. If the driveway is cracked or sinking, we check the base and drainage before recommending resurfacing or a rebuild.

Do I need council approval?
Usually not for work inside your property boundary. You do for the crossover in the road reserve. See our crossover guide.
