The Benefits of Asphalt Driveways and Finding the Right Asphalt Contractors

A good driveway does a lot of work: it carries your cars every day, it moves water away from the house, and it’s the first thing people see. Here’s why most of our customers choose asphalt, and how to pick a contractor who’ll build it to last.
Why choose asphalt?
- Use it quickly. Hot-mix asphalt hardens as it cools, so you’re usually back on it within a day or two. Concrete needs much longer to cure.
- Flexible and easy to repair. Asphalt flexes a little with the ground, and a damaged section can be cut out and patched cleanly.
- Neat, even finish that blends with the road and suits most Coast homes.
Is asphalt cheaper than concrete?
“Honestly, the prices aren’t that far apart in my experience. They’re closer than people realise. It really comes down to personal preference: what would you prefer at your property, and what’s it for?” – Nathan

Doing the crossover too?
Central Coast Council approves asphalt (40mm minimum), plain concrete, coloured concrete and stencilled concrete for the crossing between your boundary and the road. It won’t approve pavers, tiles, exposed aggregate or stamped concrete there. If Council or a utility later digs up the crossing, Council restores it in plain concrete. With asphalt or decorative concrete, you sign a waiver accepting that, and any cost to match the original finish is yours. (Source: Council’s Vehicle Access Crossing application form.) What makes an asphalt driveway last
Almost every failure comes back to two shortcuts:
- The wrong base. “Contractors will scratch off the surface and go over something that shouldn’t be built on, like clay. It’ll rain and it’ll fail within a year or two.”
- Too thin. “I’ve seen jobs quoted at a certain depth and then put in incredibly thin, like 10mm. We quote 40mm. It goes down at around 50mm and compacts to 40mm.”
Doing it properly takes time and money. “Our business runs on fuel, manpower and machines, and none of those things are cheap. If you want the job to last, you need to do it to a certain quality.” – Nathan
How to choose an asphalt contractor
- Get a site visit or proper photos before the price. “We’d gone out to the site to quote it and done our preparation beforehand. We knew what to expect, so there were no surprises.”
- Make sure the quote states the depth and the base, for example 40mm of hot-mix asphalt on compacted road base. If it doesn’t say, ask.
- Ask what happens if they hit rock or soft ground. A fair quote has a variation clause that explains this up front.
- Read recent reviews, preferably ones that mention similar jobs.
- Get the terms in writing: deposit, when the balance is due, and the warranty. Ours are a 50% deposit to book, the balance on completion, and a 2-year workmanship warranty.
